When You’re Running QRP in a World Full of Kilowatts

There is something the SEO industry doesn’t talk about very often.

Probably because it’s difficult to sell.

Probably because there isn’t a fancy dashboard for it.

Probably because there isn’t a monthly subscription attached to it.

But it’s true.

I’m a ham radio operator.

Not the Hollywood version.

The real version.

The one where grown adults get ridiculously excited because someone halfway around the world heard a signal that left a tiny radio smaller than my hand sitting on my kitchen table.

And strangely enough…

Google reminds me more and more of amateur radio every single day.

The Biggest Station Doesn’t Always Win

If you’ve ever looked at amateur radio, you’ll discover something fascinating.

Some stations have towers taller than houses. Built by other people.

Massive antennas. Designed by other people.

Expensive amplifiers.

Thousands and thousands of dollars worth of equipment.

They can throw enormous amounts of power into the air.

They’re loud.

Very loud.

Nobody questions that.

Then…

…there’s the other guy.

He has a tiny radio. Maybe he built it himself

Maybe he has five watts.

Sometimes even less.

A piece of wire hanging in a tree.

A homemade antenna.

A cup of coffee. (OK……. probably MORE than just one cup, more like a flask of coffee)

And optimism.

Lots of optimism.

We call that…

QRP.

Low power operating.

Now here’s the interesting part.

QRP stations regularly talk around the world.

On five watts.

Sometimes one watt.

Sometimes even less.

How?

Because they understand something.

Power isn’t everything.

Planning is.

A Good Antenna Beats More Power

Ask any experienced amateur radio operator what matters most…

…and they’ll almost always tell you…

The antenna.

Not the radio.

Not the amplifier.

The antenna.

Because the antenna determines how efficiently your signal leaves your station.

A badly designed antenna can waste hundreds of watts.

A well-designed antenna can make five watts sound like fifty.

Sound familiar?

It should.

Because websites work the same way.

Google Doesn’t Care How Loud You Shout

Some businesses spend hundreds of thousands on advertising.

SEO agencies.

PPC.

Social media.

Influencers.

Video production.

Marketing departments.

Brand consultants.

Coffee consultants.

Probably consultants that consult consultants.

Good for them.

Seriously.

If you have the budget…

Fantastic.

But what if you don’t?

What if you’re one person?

Building your business after work?

Trying to support your family?

Working until midnight…

…because tomorrow morning you still have to go to your day job?

Then what?

Then you’re QRP.

And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Google Isn’t Listening For Volume

Google isn’t standing there with a decibel meter.

It isn’t saying…

“Oh…

This website spent 500,000 on advertising.

Let’s rank them.”

That’s not how it works.

Google is trying to answer questions.

It wants confidence.

Consistency.

Clear signals.

Structure.

Relationships.

Evidence.

Trust.

Exactly like radio.

Propagation Matters

Every ham radio operator knows about propagation.

You don’t just throw a wire into a tree and hope.

Well… actually… we do.

Then we wonder why nothing works.

Then we move the wire.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Eventually…

You begin learning…

At certain times of the day (and year), certain frequencies travel further.

The efficiency of your antenna now matters.

The direction of your signal now matters.

Weather matters.

Solar activity matters.

Time matters.

Patience matters.

Coffee matters.

Websites aren’t much different.

You don’t just publish a page…

…and wake up number one on Google.

You build.

You learn.

You improve.

You refine.

You wait.

Google learns.

Google tests.

Google revisits.

Google gains confidence.

Sound familiar?

Five Watts…

…But with a Plan

I’ve worked stations across Europe…

Asia…

Australia…

using just five watts.

Not because I had the biggest signal.

Because I had the right signal…

…at the right time…

…pointed the antenna in roughly the right direction…

…using an antenna that had been thought through.

That isn’t luck.

That’s engineering.

SEO is exactly the same.

Your Website Doesn’t Need To Be The Loudest

It needs to make sense.

It needs to answer questions.

It needs good structure.

It needs pages that naturally connect.

It needs consistency.

It needs patience.

Most importantly…

It needs to give Google confidence.

Because confidence becomes trust.

Trust becomes visibility.

Visibility becomes visitors.

Visitors become customers.

Stop Comparing Your Garden To Someone Else’s Forest

This is probably the biggest lesson I’ve learned being in the SEO industry for almost a decade, and while building Growth Architect AI.

It’s very easy to look at the giant companies.

Huge budgets.

Huge teams.

Huge websites.

Thousands of backlinks.

Millions of visitors.

Then you look at your own website…

…and think…

“What’s the point?”

Wrong question.

The better question is…

“What can I improve today?”

One page.

One explanation.

One better title.

One clearer article.

One better user experience.

Small improvements…

Repeated consistently…

Become very large improvements.

Google notices.

Eventually.

Google Thinks More Like An Engineer Than A Salesman

People often imagine Google as some magical black box.

I don’t.

I imagine Google as an engineer.

An engineer who has to evaluate billions of websites every day.

It doesn’t have feelings.

It doesn’t care how much money you spent.

It simply asks…

“Does this make sense?”

That’s a surprisingly fair question.

Keep Transmitting

One of my favourite things in amateur radio…

…is using Morse code.

There’s something incredibly peaceful about sitting under a tree on a Saturday morning with a cup of coffee, my little 5-watt QRP radio, and a simple piece of wire hanging in a tree.

That wire wasn’t thrown up randomly.

It was carefully thought through.

The height.

The direction.

The propagation.

The time of day.

Everything has a purpose.

I settle back in my chair…

Take a sip of coffee…

…and call CQ.

Nothing.

So I call again.

Nothing.

Another sip of coffee…

I call again…

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

Again.

Now I’m beginning to wonder if I’m just talking to myself.

I smile…

Take another sip of coffee…

…thinking perhaps today’s just one of those days.

Then…

BOOM!!

Somebody comes back to me.

Clear as day.

From halfway around the world!

They heard me.

Using nothing more than five watts

…and a piece of wire hanging in a tree.

That’s websites.

You publish.

Nothing.

You improve.

Nothing.

You publish again.

Nothing.

Then one day…

BOOM!!

Google answers.

Not because you shouted louder.

But because your signal finally reached the right place.

So…

If you’re building a website after work…

If you’re learning SEO because hiring an agency isn’t possible…

If you’re trying to grow a business one article at a time…

If your marketing budget is roughly the equivalent to the loose change in your car…

Don’t panic.

You’re simply running QRP.

Low power…

…doesn’t mean low potential.

It simply means your planning has to be better.

Your structure has to be smarter.

Your patience has to last longer.

Eventually…

Google hears you.

And once Google starts hearing you…

It tells its friends.
